Taking Antoni Gaudí‘s columns in Sagrada Familia as basis, this four day long workshop looked at two challenges: the description and representation of columns and the creation of a potentially underlying geometrical guide, and how we branch columns and join them elegantly to the trunk. Through parametric design three possible branching systems were generated, based on one geometrically simple shape. To understand the resulting shapes of the columns better, they were fabricated by counter rotating the profile curve with different angles as they rotate up along the base. We were equally involved in the designing process and the fabrication, and I was particularly involved in the fabrication and understanding how the rotation physically works.
