The district of Poblenou in Barcelona has always been the industrial area of the city. Over the last few years it is becoming a popular area among bigger companies, therefore forcing smaller, local companies to move away. The most important guideline the students were supposed to follow, was to design an educational project which in this case was the following question: how can the local industries and craftsmen be able to stay in Poblenou and coexist or even benefit more from each other? After mapping and studying the local shops and offices in Poblenou that provide their services to the locals it was clear, that everyone has something different to offer but no one would know what their neighbor is doing. Hence, the proposal wants to push the local industries into innovation through collaboration of the existing knowledge.
The goal is to help the local industries to cooperate and be more linked and rooted within the district. A concept is created: three local industries are selected, namely the car, the textile and paper industry. Together these industries build a shared space that functions as a networking platform. This shared space is constructed by using materials which the three industries are working with on a daily basis; the car industry provides the structure, the textile industry mylar, a robust and lightweight fabric, the paper industry offers paper waste as material to link the other two. By the different compositions of the three basic materials, the building components are created. Already the construction of the building is the first intend to activate the knowledge and skills in this area. To initiate this project a space in the heart of Poblenou is established. It works as an educational platform where local craftsmen can educate the citizens and create awareness about their knowledge and simultaneously get in contact with like-minded people to start new collaborations among themselves.
